Mount Royal: Calgary’s Original Inner‑City Neighbourhood
You know those neighbourhoods that feel like they actually built the city? Mount Royal is one of them. It’s one of Calgary’s oldest established communities, dating back to the early 1900s when it started as an elite subdivision promoted by the Canadian Pacific Railway. Back then it was informally called “American Hill” because many of the early residents were Americans settling here for new opportunities, before the name evolved into Mount Royal.
What makes Mount Royal so desirable -beyond the beautiful homes - is that it’s got real architectural depth. You’ll see heritage estates with details you won’t find in newer builds anywhere else in the city, right alongside carefully designed contemporary homes that feel polished without being flashy. Trees line practically every street, and there’s this quiet sense of balance between history and growth that not every neighbourhood can pull off.
Mount Royal essentially splits into two zones: Upper Mount Royal, where most of the classic, larger single‑family homes sit on mature lots, and Lower Mount Royal, which leans more toward condos and apartment living while still keeping that distinctive character.
One of the best parts of Mount Royal is how walkable and connected it feels. You’re perched just south of downtown and backed right up against Calgary’s 17 Avenue corridor, which means there’s no shortage of shops, restaurants, and services to explore - from local boutiques to laid‑back patios and late‑night haunts.
Even though I don’t live there (yet), I often find myself strolling through the neighbourhood in the spring and summer months. Walking these streets gives this mix of appreciation for the city’s roots and excitement about what’s next, and honestly, it’s exactly the kind of place that’s been on my vision board as somewhere to call home one day.
